The @asdsskinmd #ASDSAnnualMeeting is always a great place to share knowledge about the latest and greatest in dermatological innovation.

I met with @newbeauty editor @tatianabido at the meeting to talk about developments in skin treatments and technologies that are making an impact in my practice. #Skinvive, the first skin booster to gain FDA approval, has been very popular in Europe for many years (where it’s named Volite) and has fast become a favorite among my patients. I’ve been injecting this in microdroplets throughout the cheeks to soften crinkles as per the on-label indication, and also have been getting great results from off-label use of this injectable hydrating serum. One of the most popular treatment areas has been the chest skin, where we can achieve significant improvement in the smoothness and crease-resistance of this delicate anatomic area.

I love great gifting, so it was fun to contribute to @nymag @thestrategist’s 2024 skincare gift guide. The gift of a beautiful skincare product can be an unexpected treat… and no one’s ever regretted taking care of their skin!
 One of my favorites for this season is @lamer’s new The Rejuvenating Night Cream which features their clinically-researched marine retinol alternative, MRA-3. I find this soothing and smoothing cream to be well tolerated, including by those who are sensitive to retinoids, and who wouldn’t love the gift of beauty sleep. 💤

Another new favorite, especially with colder weather being part of the holiday season for many, is the @augustinusbader Rich Eye Cream. It’s a lush formula that includes their proprietary TFC8 complex of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, and makes the eye area look really refreshed. Like champagne, it’s even better when chilled (for maximum depuffing). 🥂

$@highsnobiety recently interviewed me about the interplay between politics and aesthetics as I see it in our DC practice. With elections approaching and politicians increasingly in the public eye, it’s a timely topic to discuss the relationship between appearance and the perceptions of competence, power, trustworthiness, and likability. I frequently counsel patients on the concept of «plausibly deniable results». The prevailing goal for my patients is not to appear transformed through treatments but rather to look fresh and to slow the arc of aging through discreet enhancements. My patients also often reference concerns about unintentional messaging, such as not wanting to look tired or grouchy when appearing on camera. To achieve subtle optimizations I like to create a comprehensive #dermatology treatment plan that focuses on skin quality, incorporating gentle fractionated lasers, “baby Botox,” and subtle injections of skin boosters and fillers. Achieving natural-looking results that preserve the character of a face is actually more difficult than producing a more obvious change, whether non-surgically or surgically ( 👀 @drarielrad), and requires a high level of attention to detail and expertise… and a light hand, as @carlraymua says! As the holiday season approaches, I often combine treatments for my patients - while I recommend consistency over intensity in a comprehensive treatment plan, combination treatments are a way to accelerate results and give a rapid boost in skin quality before a party or other big event. 🪩

Gentle resurfacing lasers like #clearandbrilliant are among my go-tos for reducing summer sun damage and improving skin texture and tone with minimal downtime. A great pre-event combination is to add on #skinvive skin boosters for hydration and glow, and “baby Botox” to give a subtle lift and enhanced smoothness. Tiny amounts of fillers can also bounce light off shadows to give the look of being permanently in good lighting.

I customize each treatment plan since everyone’s anatomy and goals are different… but great skin looks great on everyone!

We founded @sherberandrad to give patients an optimal synergy of dermatology and plastic surgery care, and laser treatment features prominently in our perioperative planning since it’s clinically proven to reduce the appearance of scars. Depending on the wavelengths chosen, lasers can reduce redness, fade hyperpigmentation, smooth texture, and accelerate the healing process.

Laser Genesis, a micropulsed Nd:YAG laser, is one of my favorite treatments for early scar healing. It’s a gentle and effective way to reduce scars’ redness and soften scar tissue. This wonderful patient underwent deep neck sculpting surgery with @drarielrad and opted for full face #LaserGenesis to fade scars as well as to reduce facial redness overall.

Early intervention is shown to be beneficial in studies of scar outcomes, so I often start laser scar treatment 2 weeks after suture removal or 3 weeks after surgery, and may pre-treat areas into which scars will be placed with lasers and/or Botox.

One of my key bits of advice is to go through and discard products that have been open for more than a year and to update your regimen to a very intentional assortment. A simplified set of #skincare essentials: cleanser + day product + night product.

🌙 Nighttime should focus on repair: retinoids, peptides, and barrier repair as indicated by skin type

In the June issue of @washingtonianmag I talked with @cathyalterwrites as she tried out several unconventional facial treatments in the DC area. After experiencing an aesthetician’s technique of facial slapping, promising to contour, sculpt, and tighten the face, Cathy wanted my thoughts on the technique. Overall, this can function like facial massage and can provide a temporary boost in circulation. We also discussed microcurrent treatments which trigger muscle contractions and give the face a more toned appearance, although long term effects are less established.

The big picture is one that I share often with my patients: no noninvasive treatment can claim surgical results. That’s not to say that facials aren’t beneficial, there’s just no such thing as a non-surgical facelift!
