Subcision
Subcision is a minor surgical procedure that uses a hypodermic needle to reduce the appearance of the scar. This needle acts to break the fibrous connective tissues between the scar and deeper layers of skin and stimulates the production of collagen in the site of injection allowing for the skin to be lifted. Therefore, it is particularly beneficial for all types of acne scars, deeper scars from wounds, and post-surgical scars as they are more depressed into the skin. Subcision can also be used in combination with other treatments, like TCA cross, to create a dual effect and reduce the scar by smoothening and raising the skin.
01Consultation + Preparation
In preparation for the consultation it is important to let us know if you have a history of herpes simplex cold sores, so that we may prescribe an oral antiviral to take as an adjunct to treatment to prevent an outbreak. For your first treatment, discontinue any retinoids (retinol, Retin-A) for a week prior to treatment.
During the consultation, our team will take high resolution photographs for your record so that we can observe the results of your treatment with accuracy. We will then ask you about your medical history, including current medications and any prior procedures. Dr. Sherber will talk with you about your specific goals and customize a treatment plan for you that might include Botox, other injectables, laser treatments, and skincare products.
02Procedure
Immediately before subcision treatment we will clean your skin thoroughly, and Dr. Sherber will carefully assess the area or areas of concern. Treatment is comfortable and typically does not take a great deal of time to perform and does not require a topical anesthetic.
During treatment, Dr. Sherber will insert a hypodermic needle into the skin directly underneath the scar of concern. This is done to break apart the fibers between the scar and tissue, working to reduce the appearance of the scar. Treatment takes about 15 minutes.

03recovery
Your usual activity can be resumed immediately after treatment and makeup can be applied to the areas treated as you will not have peeling or other more noticeable after-effects.
04results
After a subcision procedure, patients will notice gradual improvement in the scars that were treated after about 4 weeks.
These treatments need to be repeated several times to achieve optimal results. In some cases, treatments are performed in a series of 3-6 sessions spaced out every 4 weeks over the course of several months.
