TCA Cross

TCA CROSS is used for a few skin concerns such as sebaceous hyperplasia and acne scarring. Using what is termed the TCA Cross Method, Dr. Sherber will apply a 75% Trichloroacetic Acid to small raised bumps on the face or to each of the sunken acne scars to treat and heal the skin in those areas. TCA (trichloroacetic acid) is a relative of vinegar (acetic acid) and is safe for topical use on all skin types, but caution must be used with deeper skin tones or on tanned skin. In order to ensure patient safety and optimal results, Dr. Sherber often elects to perform a test spot with TCA to ensure that the treated areas will heal without any pigmentation problems.

01Consultation + Preparation

In preparation for the consultation it is important to note that Retinoids should be discontinued for a week prior to treatment. If you have a history of herpes simplex cold sores, please let us know so that we may have an antiviral to take as an adjunct to treatment of an outbreak. TCA (trichloroacetic acid) is a relative of vinegar (acetic acid) and is safe for topical use on all skin types, but caution must be used with deeper skin tones or on tanned skin.

During the consultation, our team will take high resolution photographs for your record so that we can observe the results of your treatment with accuracy. We will then ask you about your medical history, including current medications and any prior procedures. Dr. Sherber will talk with you about your specific goals and customize a treatment plan for you that might include Botox, other injectables, laser treatments, and skincare products. Skin concerns targeted include acne scarring and sebaceous hyperplasia.

02Procedure

Immediately before a peel treatment, Dr. Sherber will clean your skin thoroughly with an acetone solution to remove any oils from the skin.

TCA treatment is applied precisely until a white frost forms over the spot to be treated and a thin rim of surrounding skin. The peel creates a mild and temporary stinging feeling, but is not painful. Dr. Sherber often elects to perform a test spot with TCA to ensure that the treated areas will heal without any pigmentation problems. Treatment does not require numbing and takes 15 minutes.

03recovery

In the days following a peel treatment of any kind, it is important to be diligent with sun protection and avoid sun exposure on the healing areas. Dr. Sherber typically recommends a mineral sunscreen as the gentlest approach for sensitive skin types. For a TCA peel treatment, spots treated will be slightly white and appear “frosted” following the treatment until you wash your face. The spots will remain red for a few days following the treatment.

04results

The high resolution photographs taken at the time of your consultation will be used so that we can observe the results of your treatment with accuracy. Several treatments may be needed depending on the skin concern being treated.
