Daxxify

Daxxify (daxibotulinumtoxinA) is a new injectable wrinkle reducing treatment made of a purified protein called botulinum toxin A, the same type of toxin that’s used in all of the injectable toxins that are FDA approved for cosmetic use in the United States. It differs from other neuromodulators in that its proprietary peptide stabilizes the toxin in the muscle, and it has been shown to smooth moderate to severe lines between the brows with results that are longer lasting than other cosmetic toxins such as Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, or Jeuveau. Clinical studies show that, whereas results with other toxins last 3-4 months, at least 50% of patients injected with Daxxify had no or minor frown lines 6 months after treatment. In other safety studies, between 5% and 17% of patients still had noticeable improvement 9 months later.

Botulinum toxins are purified from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum which is used to inhibit the transmission of specific chemical signals from nerves, primarily those signals that cause muscular contractions. This temporary relaxation of facial muscles reduces the appearance of wrinkles and improves the look of expression lines. In order to achieve these skin smoothening results, all injected neurotoxins require a special ingredient to stabilize botulinum toxin A, the protein responsible for helping relax muscles and smooth lines. Daxxify differs from other botulinum toxin type A injectable products in that a novel proprietary peptide stabilizes the toxin in the neuromuscular junction. Daxxify is unique in that it is the only formulation that uses a novel peptide as a stabilizer and does not contain human nor animal byproducts

Daxxify is manufactured by Revance Therapeutics, a U.S. company based in California, that was founded as a start-up in 2002 to explore the use of peptides in biologics for different therapeutic uses. Their goal was to utilize peptides to transport biologics, typically large molecules, through the skin with the initial idea to formulate botulinum toxin type A with a peptide to be applied topically to the skin to treat crow’s feet wrinkles. Through this process, scientists discovered that the formulation was optimally administered through injection and several clinical studies were carried out to determine the proper dose for an injectable product that would treat frown lines.

01Consultation + Preparation

In preparation for the consultation it is important to decide if you are a good candidate for Daxxify treatment. It may be the right choice if you are currently disappointed with the duration of your previous injectable neuromodulator treatment and are looking for longer lasting results. Although Daxxify is generally safe and effective in all skin types, those who are allergic to any of the ingredients or have had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product such as rimabotulinumtoxinB (Myobloc), onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox), abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport), incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin) or prabotulinumtoxinA (Jeuveau), or have a skin infection at the planned injection site, or are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised not to receive treatment. Bruising is uncommon, but the risk can be minimized if you avoid taking blood thinners, Aspirin, NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen or Aleve, for two weeks unless medically necessary, as well as any supplements containing fish oil or omega 3, vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, and alcohol.

During the consultation, our team will take high resolution photographs for your record so that we can observe the results of your treatment with accuracy. We will then ask you about your medical history, including current medications and any prior procedures. Dr. Sherber will talk with you about your specific goals and customize a treatment plan for you that might include Botox, other injectables, laser treatments, and skincare products. Areas that we typically treat are between the brows and around the eyes to reduce signs of wrinkles.

02Procedure

Immediately before Daxxify treatment we will clean your skin thoroughly, and Dr. Sherber will map out your muscular anatomy by asking you to move your facial muscles and make various expressions. It is a comfortable treatment done in the same manner as other neuromodulators – discomfort is minimal as Dr. Sherber uses exceptionally thin needles and a highly concentrated solution to inject Daxxify with precision. Several points will be injected, with the exact number of injections needed determined by your anatomy and by the extent of the areas being treated. Two Daxxify units are equivalent to one Botox unit, so you can expect to receive more Daxxify units than you would Botox units. New studies support that optimal Daxxify dosing to achieve a longer duration begins at 40 units for frown lines, 48 units for crow’s feet, and 32 units for the upper forehead with stronger muscles requiring a higher number of units for optimal results. Treatment takes about 5-10 minutes.

Daxxify was studied in the largest-ever clinical study for a frown line treatment and included more than 2,800 people across different ages and skin types. In this study there were no serious treatment-related side effects. The active ingredient in Daxxify is botulinum toxin type A, an ingredient that has been used in frown line treatments for more than 20 years. The injection points can look like little bug bites for a few minutes post-treatment, but Dr. Sherber will apply a soothing serum and gentle sunscreen to your skin before you depart to help calm and protect it. These side effects tend to be very minor and resolve quickly. Patients may also experience minor bruising, which can be covered up using a concealer. Dr. Sherber often starts with a lighter dose with a new or first-time patient so as to ensure that the result is not overly dramatic.

Within a day, and typically within two days patients might begin to see changes to appearance. In one clinical trial, 96% of people treated with Daxxify were satisfied with their results at 4 weeks with lasting effects up to twice as long as those achieved with other neuromodulators. The duration of treatment will vary based on your own anatomy and muscle strength. For some patients, Dr. Sherber will “mix and match” and use Daxxify in areas that tend to regain movement quickest after toxin treatment and other products in other anatomic areas.
