Botox
BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable neuromodulator, or neurotoxin, that has been the most popular cosmetic treatment in the United States for over 25 years. It was approved by the FDA in 2002, and is the first and only treatment FDA-approved to smooth moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults for several months. It is also commonly used off-label in other areas, such as in the jawline to relax tightened masseter muscles and in the underarms to reduce excessive perspiration.
Expertise is essential to achieving natural results and to creating predictable and subtle outcomes that help to prevent wrinkles in the long term. Dr. Sherber is a board-certified dermatologist recognized as an expert in the art of BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, giving patients “plausibly deniable” results without ever looking “frozen” or “done.” For those who are frequently in the public eye, this popular injectable improves skin smoothness and can prevent the formation of deeper facial lines. As cited in the Washington Post: "Optimal treatments for those who are frequently on television focus on skin quality," says Washington dermatologist Noëlle Sherber... "She has several patients — elected officials, CEOs, and others in the public eye — who start 'prejuvenation' treatments in their 30s and 40s. So that by the time they reach their 70s," she says, "they look like they’re still in their 50s.’" Dr. Sherber was named Washington DC’s best for Botox in Allure magazine: “D.C. women who’ve tried doctor after doctor for Botox keep coming back to this one.” She also serves as an Advisory Board member to help develop best practices and innovation for Allergan Aesthetics (the manufacturer of Botox®). Dr. Sherber has published research on differential Botox dosing across patient ages, and on evidence-based approaches to microbotox for skin quality treatment. She is a Principle Investigator in the FDA Phase III clinical trial of Botox for masseter muscle prominence, also known as “jawline” Botox, to relax masseter muscles to achieve a slimmer facial structure. In clinical practice, this treatment can also treat various conditions such as teeth grinding, jaw clenching, and headaches. Although some people are concerned that Botox® will make them look frozen or permanently surprised, a very nuanced lifting of the brows or smoothing of the forehead or picking up the corners of the mouth is achievable with the correct approach.
Though there are other neuromodulators on the market, Botox is widely considered the gold standard. Treatment is quick and comfortable – injections take about 10 minutes (depending on number of areas treated) and do not require numbing, which allows patients the flexibility to schedule their treatment at any time during the day. It is also effective – this minimally invasive treatment makes it possible for men and women to experience a more youthful look in the forehead, around the eyes, and around the mouth, without the need for surgical intervention. It is rejuvenating – patients are able to enjoy improved skin quality and reduced wrinkles within days. It is cost-effective – as a result of the personalization to address a patient’s cosmetic goals, we can develop a treatment plan that is in line with your desired investment and utilize Allē, a rewards program, and CareCredit financing options to help offset the cost of treatment. Finally, there is no down-time required – patients are able to achieve desired results whilst returning to normal daily activities immediately post treatment.
The most frequent use for this injectable is to soften the expression lines on the face and help to prevent wrinkles for months at a time. At Sherber + Rad, this neurotoxin treatment can also be utilized to minimize pores and provide a smoother look and can be paired with many other treatment options offered conveniently in the comforts of our office. One of the most cutting edge techniques that Dr. Sherber employs is to pre-treat areas of the face in which facial surgeries are planned (such as facelift, blepharoplasty, cosmetic mole excision, or skin cancer excision) to temporarily reduce the underlying muscle activity and therefore reduce tension on healing skin to minimize scar formation.

02Procedure
Immediately before Botox treatment we will clean your skin thoroughly, and Dr. Sherber will map out your muscular anatomy by asking you to move your facial muscles and make various expressions. It is a comfortable treatment – discomfort is minimal as Dr. Sherber uses exceptionally thin needles and a highly concentrated solution to inject Botox with precision. Several points will be injected, with the exact number of injections needed determined by your anatomy and by the extent of the areas being treated. Treatment takes about 5-10 minutes.

It may look like your skin has small “bug bites” for a few minutes post-treatment, but Dr. Sherber will apply a soothing serum and gentle sunscreen to your skin before you depart to help calm and protect it. Patients may also experience minor bruising, which can be covered up using a concealer. Dr. Sherber often starts with a lighter dose with a new or first-time patient so as to ensure that the result is not overdone. Within 3-4 days, patients might begin to see changes to appearance, but we recommend returning for additional treatment after two weeks, if necessary, since it takes 2 weeks to see the full result.

The high resolution photographs taken at the time of your consultation will be used so that we can observe the results of your treatment with accuracy. After two weeks, patients should expect to see reduced lines and wrinkles when articulating facial expressions. Over time, this prevention of the skin folds from over-animated facial expressions will cause pre-existing wrinkles to diminish significantly while preventing future wrinkles from developing.
