Overview of Liposuction Surgery in Washington

Liposuction is the gold standard for removing fatty deposits in areas of that body that tend to be stubborn to weight loss. This body contouring procedure involves small, hidden incisions to access the regions with excess stubborn fat where it is then removed with a cannula.

The areas of the body Dr. Rad most commonly treats with liposuction are the abdomen, flanks, the inner and outer thighs, as well as the arms and the neck. After excess fat is removed, the skin generally reforms tightly to the body’s new contours. If skin elasticity is not ideal, patients might want to consider alternative procedures for liposuction.

Liposuction is a safe, outpatient procedure that generally takes about one or two weeks to recover.

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction Surgery?

It is common for most of us to look in the mirror and see at least one or two areas of the body we wish had less fat. Often times, that fat can linger despite dieting and exercise. Getting rid of this fat permanently can be achieved with liposuction. This is part of the reason liposuction is one of the most common surgical procedures in the country.

Typically, the ideal candidate is one who has already lost a significant amount of weight and struggles with loose skin and/or stretched abdominal walls post-pregnancy.

People who are considering liposuction should be close to their ideal weight. Liposuction is not meant to be used as a tool for losing large amounts of weight, but rather as a tool for effective body contouring and touching up small areas of the body.

An ideal candidate for liposuction is one who is committed to a healthy lifestyle, doesn’t smoke and has no underlying health concerns that may make the procedure risky.

If there is a large amount of excess skin or skin elasticity is limited, it can be difficult to achieve a good result. This is because poor skin elasticity does not retract as well as skin that has not been excessively stretched or overly thinned. A combination of liposuction with other treatments might be the answer here. Dr. Rad will take his time with each patient during your consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction.

Areas that liposuction is most effective are: Love handles, Abdomen, Thighs, Neck, Arms

Q+A

HOW DOES DR. RAD PERFORM LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction improves body and facial contours and overall body proportions by
removing subcutaneous fat (i.e. fat just under the skin). Dr. Rad inserts a hollow tube or “cannula,” using small incisions, and by using meticulous technique in moving the cannula back-and-forth through the fat layer, Dr. Rad is able to sculpt and mold the areas. Dr. Rad injects numbing solution called tumescent fluid which also contains epinephrine to minimize bleeding which is quite minor. Incisions are inconspicuous as Dr. Rad places them in hidden areas or natural creases where they are out of sight.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER LIPOSUCTION?

Bruising and swelling are common and can last several weeks or months. Moderate discomfort is easily controlled on pain medicine. Dr. Rad follows the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) pain protocol which allows patients quickly to taper off strong pain medicine and return to normal activity faster. Downtime is typically 7-14 days depending on the number of areas of the body treated. Compression is important to wear for 6-8 weeks. Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after surgery and frequently on a daily basis. Return to full activity depends on athleticism: for example, it can take about a week to return to yoga or easy spin class, whereas intense “bootcamp” type of classes may require several weeks to work up to.

WHAT KIND OF ANESTHESIA IS USED?

For body contouring light sedation anesthesia is used but it is an outpatient procedure, which means you can return home the same day. Anesthesia maximizes comfort and safety and Dr. Rad works with a Board certified anesthesiologist for safest anesthesia, rapid awakening and minimal side effects such as nausea.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

Most patients desire better body proportion when focused problem areas are treated such as abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs. The key is to sculpt these regions with overall body proportion in mind, and Dr. Rad is expert in determining the right proportion for his patients. All patients can expect to fit better in clothing, and provided skin tone is excellent then smooth contours with smaller circumference gives optimal results.

IF I HAVE CELLULITE, WILL LIPOSUCTION HELP?

Liposuction is not the right technique for fat removal in the setting of cellulite because the irregularity of contour can actually be worsened by fat removal. Oftentimes skin looseness is present and so skin tightening procedures such as Thermage FLX can help. Keep in mind that “non-feedback control” devices with skin tightening claims such as BodyTyte don’t work reliably).

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DIFFERENT LIPOSUCTION DEVICES?

SmartLipo, SlimLipo, Vaser Lipo, and Power-Assisted Liposuction all use different technology to loosen or melt fat. However they all depend on suction for removal. While the laser-based devices claim skin tightening, this has never been proven in controlled blinded studies (and therefore falls under the category of an unproven claim for marketing). Furthermore, SmartLipo, SlimLipo and Vaser Lipo have 2 additional drawbacks: (1) they pose a risk to patients for burning because of the heat delivered at the very tip of the cannula – this can be dangerous in inexperienced hands, and (2) they incur higher fees because the machines are very expensive to purchase and maintain. Dr. Rad has used all technologies of liposuction and has found that power-assisted “Microaire” liposuction is equally effective for fat removal and body contouring, and is also most cost-effective as there is no upcharge for use of this technology.

How Does Dr. Rad Approach Liposuction Surgery?

Dr. Rad uses liposuction safely and permanently to remove fat through hidden and small incisions. Suction-Assisted Liposuction is most effective in the setting of good skin elasticity and in the absence of skin looseness or stretch marks. There is no proven difference between laser liposuction (SmartlipoTM), VASERTM liposuction and traditional suction techniques.

Dr. Rad places very small incisions in hidden or covered areas through which a long metal ‘cannula’ (a thin tube with holes at the end) is inserted and fat is suctioned out. Liposuction with Dr. Rad is akin to a sculptor molding clay – achieving a smooth and beautiful result depends on the surgeon’s skill and artistic vision. He often combines Abdominoplasty + Liposuction for a more comprehensive result.

This is an outpatient surgery taking approximately 1-3 hours to perform depending on how many areas to treat. Temporary moderate discomfort is common and is easily controlled with pain medications. Bruising and swelling are common and subside over 6 weeks.

Consultation with Dr. Rad

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY CONSULTATION WITH DR. RAD?

The design and experience of our plastic surgery office in Washington DC is centered on your comfort and privacy. You’ll be received by our exquisitely attentive staff, and escorted to your own private cabana wherein you’ll feel relaxed and comfortable while consulting discreetly with Dr. Rad. First Dr. Rad will determine if you are a good candidate for facelift surgery and during your consultation you should decide if Dr. Rad is the right facelift surgeon for you. Credentials are crucial and, in addition to being Board certified in plastic surgery, Dr. Rad is Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins, and he enjoys an impeccable reputation as a top flight aesthetic surgeon. His facial plastic surgery expertise is sought out as one of the best facelift surgeons in Washington DC, northern Virginia and the US.

Your safety is Dr. Rad’s primary concern and he will review your medical history. You should inform Dr. Rad of any medical problems or medications that may affect your healing. If you are medically appropriate to undergo facelift surgery then Dr. Rad’s focus will be to understand what specific aesthetic concerns you have. Washington facelift patients expect natural results with minimal downtime. Dr. Rad will spend time carefully listening to your concerns, asking clarifying questions and then masterfully guiding you, step by step, to understand how your unique anatomy can be improved to convey a rested appearance. Dr. Rad’s goal is to determine the most comprehensive facelift approach for long lasting, natural results while minimizing downtime. Dr. Rad first needs to understand your specific concerns and you should prepare your thoughts prior to your consultation. Think of words that convey how you feel about your appearance. For example, Washington DC facelift patients often say they look fatigued, tired or lackluster because of undereye bags or dark undereye circles, or they look sad, upset or disinterested such as from heavy eyebrows, excess skin above the eyes or downturned corners of the mouth. Patients often relate concerns of looking older than how they feel and this can be caused by jowls, nasolabial folds, loose neck skin, lines and wrinkles. Try to put into words how your appearance bothers you, and the priority you give to each area. Dr. Rad will then present to you his expert opinion about which procedures would be best to restore your anatomy to create a rested and refreshed appearance. In addition to facelift surgery oftentimes patients can benefit from other procedures such as brow lift, eyelid lift, facial fat transfer, or rhinoplasty. And since facelift surgery is intricate Dr. Rad will guide you through a stepwise approach of aesthetic analysis and he’ll deliver his recommendations in a clear and honest manner. Dr. Rad will present all options available in modern day facelift surgery, both non-surgical and surgical.

Dr. Rad and Board certified dermatologist Dr. Sherber often collaborate to optimize patients’ results and to minimize invasiveness. As such Dr. Rad’s modern approach to facelift surgery harnesses the power of both dermatology and plastic surgery as both specialities address different aesthetic challenges. For example, plastic surgery is effective to lift, tighten and volumize loose, atrophied tissues, whereas dermatologic treatments such as laser, radiofrequency tightening and skincare are best to improve skin texture, pigmentation and tone. Dr. Rad can address any concerns regarding skin quality and how to obtain and maintain optimal results.

Dr. Rad will review with you photos of his patients’ results (many of which you’ll not find online due to privacy concerns) to highlight his aesthetic approaches and skill. He will take your photographs, which remain confidential, to assist with the planning of your surgery. For your safety Dr. Rad performs surgery in a hospital-based operating room, considered to be the safest environment, rather than in the office. Anesthesia is delivered by a board certified anesthesiologist (MD) and you’ll be under light anesthesia which is important for your safety and comfort.

You will receive a customized quote for the procedures in which you’re interested. Once approved we may then move forward with pre-operative preparations and you will meet with Dr. Rad again at your final in person consultation prior to surgery. Dr. Rad’s reputation as one of the most technically gifted facelift surgeons attracts patients nationally and from around the world. We cater to patients from across the globe by arranging virtual consultations, luxury accommodations at The Jefferson hotel, Washington’s most luxurious 5 star boutique hotel, as well as private nursing care.
