Body Contouring
Body contouring operations range from liposuction to tummy tuck to, in the context of massive weight loss, body lift procedures. Dr. Rad often combines procedures in order to achieve results safely.
Each patient has unique anatomy, healing ability, lifestyle and personal goals – therefore, cookie cutter approaches won’t do. Dr. Rad customizes each patient’s treatment plan uniquely, an approach that serves his patients well so that they may enjoy their results for a lifetime.
More surgery is not better. Therefore, Dr. Rad’s approach involves determining which aesthetic procedures offer the least invasive method to correct a patient’s concerns. Dr. Rad is experienced in the following procedures:
Body Shaping:
- Liposuction is ideal for patients who have excellent skin tone and elasticity and “problem areas” of stubborn fat deposits that don’t go away despite a healthy weight and lifestyle. Liposuction is the gold standard for removing fatty deposits in areas of that body that tend to be stubborn to weight loss. This body contouring procedure involves small, hidden incisions to access the regions with excess stubborn fat where it is then removed with a cannula. The areas of the body Dr. Rad most commonly treats with liposuction are the abdomen, flanks, the inner and outer thighs, as well as the arms and the neck. After excess fat is removed, the skin generally reforms tightly to the body’s new contours. If skin elasticity is not ideal, patients might want to consider alternative procedures for liposuction. Liposuction is a safe, outpatient procedure that generally takes about one or two weeks to recover.
- Abdominoplasty is suitable for patients who have loose, stretched skin either from prior pregnancy or significant weight loss. After pregnancy or even after significant weight loss, the tissues of the trunk and abdomen can change dramatically. Some of these unwanted changes include hanging tissues in the midsection, fatty deposits collecting in the flanks and thigh region, and in many cases, loose skin and stretch marks can be problematic and difficult to address without surgical options. A tummy tuck procedure is a common body contouring option to address these concerns. Tummy tuck typically combines with liposuction techniques to remove fatty tissue to contour the area while surgically removing hanging loose skin. In many cases, the core abdominal muscles need to be reattached or tightened to prevent stubborn belly bulges that tend to follow pregnancy. The combination of techniques applied by Dr. Rad allows him to recontour the abdomen to create a beautiful overall shape. State-of-the-art surgical techniques are safe and effective, making it very popular to address undesirable body changes following pregnancy and weight fluctuations.
- Mommy Makeover is excellent to restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy body proportions. As many mothers know, pregnancy takes a toll, causing physical changes such as stretched abdominal skin and muscle, deflation and droop of the breasts and poor body proportions. Dr. Rad sees hundreds of patients each year seeking mommy makeovers in DC, Virginia and out of state. It’s one of the most popular procedures designed to restore, and enhance, a woman’s body back to its pre-pregnancy appearance, and Dr. Rad often is able to give his patients results that are even better than before. What is a “mommy makeover”? Mommy makeover refers to a combination of procedures, all performed safely in one procedure, that can include tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to tighten muscle and sculpt the abdomen, liposuction to restore the hourglass waistline, combined with breast surgery, either breast lift to restore beautiful shape and bring nipples back up, or breast augmentation to restore fullness, or both. Buttock enhancement with fat injection (“Brazilian butt lift”) and vaginal rejuvenation and tightening can also be combined safely. For the breast surgery part of a mommy makeover, proportion is key and Dr. Rad’s aesthetic vision ensures patients achieve optimal results while respecting their personal preferences: for example, while Gummy Bear implants are most often used for breast augmentation, patients who want to avoid silicone implants may opt for Dr. Rad’s specialty procedure called “tissue breast aug”, aka “natural breast enhancements” This is the most natural approach because Dr. Rad repurposes a woman’s abdominal skin and fat (which is usually discarded during the tummy tuck) for her breast augmentation. By carefully transplanting the abdominal fat to a woman’s breasts, she can enjoy a beautiful breast augmentation result that is 100% her own body with no foreign substances. The “natural mommy makeover” is a highly sophisticated microsurgery procedure and Dr. Rad is proudly performing this surgery for the Washington DC community.
Massive Weight Loss:
- Facelift restores youthful contours to the face and neck and can be done safely as an outpatient.
- Belt Lipectomy is the gold standard for total lower body lifting. A belt lipectomy removes tissue of the lower trunk all the way around – the scar is circumferential.
- Chest Lift and Breast Lift are ideas for contouring and lifting sagging chest or breast tissues. Chest Lift contours the chest and is most appropriate for men.
- Arm Lifts are effective to remove very loose skin from these areas in the context of being at one’s ideal weight.
“Aesthetics are about nuance, subtlety, harmony and plausible deniability.”
- Ariel N Rad, MD, PhD, FACS

01Artistry
Dr. Rad has treated several thousand patients with body contouring surgeries, and his artistry is customized for each patient whose anatomy and needs are unique. Having an appropriate artistic vision is crucial when creating optimized results. In Dr. Rad’s experience the key to artistry is to view a body holistically and artistically rather than in individual parts or by following some “recipe” or rote formula. The reason behind this is because reshaping one area will influence the relative contour of adjacent areas and change the overall balance of the body. So, knowing exactly what combination of procedures and to what degree is an artistic endeavor. Overall, Dr. Rad’s artistry is rooted in his deep experience treating thousands of patients and his focus on body aesthetics at the highest level!
02safety
Your safety is Dr. Rad’s top priority and, for men and women, combining procedures is very safe with minimal risk in Dr. Rad’s hands. By comparison, driving a car daily entails much greater risk than undergoing anesthesia and surgery. Body Contouring surgeries are an outpatient surgery, meaning that you can go home the same day. For optimal safety, Dr. Rad works with board certified anesthesiologists and performs surgery at a hospital-based ambulatory surgery center (ASC) facility. Many plastic surgeons perform surgery in their office, but Dr. Rad considers that hospital-based surgery is the safest environment for all patients. In addition to being certified by the Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Rad has operating privileges at 6 major hospitals in the DC, northern Virginia area, giving patients peace of mind for the safest possible process.

05Aftercare
Care post-surgery is important for both your recovery and results whether at your home or at a hotel. For your safety, as you’ll be somewhat sleepy, you will need a responsible adult to stay with you for at least the first night. If you’re interested in having an experienced private duty nurse, we can help facilitate this care.
06longevity
Your vision for your results will emerge through detailed consultation with Dr. Rad, meticulous examination of your anatomy, and careful pre-surgical planning. While Dr. Rad’s surgical approach is unique for each patient, the goal of naturalness remains constant.
frequently askedQuestions
How do I know if I’m a good candidate for liposuction?
It is common for most of us to look in the mirror and see at least one or two areas of the body we wish have less fat. Oftentimes, that fat can linger despite dieting and exercising can linger despite dieting and exercise. Getting rid of this fat permanently can be achieved with liposuction. This is part of the reason liposuction is one of the most common surgical procedures in the country.
Typically, the ideal candidate is one who has already lost a significant amount of weight and struggles with loose skin and/or stretched abdominal walls post-pregnancy.
People who are considering liposuction should be close to their ideal weight. Liposuction is not meant to be used as a tool for losing large amounts of weight, but rather as a tool for effective body contouring and touching up small areas of the body.
An ideal candidate for liposuction is one who is committed to a healthy lifestyle, doesn’t smoke and has no underlying health concerns that may make the procedure risky.
If there is a large amount of excess skin or skin elasticity is limited, it can be difficult to achieve a good result. This is because poor skin elasticity does not retract as well as skin that has not been excessively stretched or overly thinned. A combination of liposuction with other treatments might be the answer here. Dr. Rad will take his time with each patient during your consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction.
Areas that liposuction is most effective are: Love handles, Abdomen, Thighs, Neck, Arms
How do I know if I’m a good candidate for Tummy Tuck surgery?
Patients who are good candidates for a tummy tuck should be somewhat near their ideal weight. It’s important to stress the fact that even though a tummy tuck can remove stubborn fat around the midsection, it is not designed to be a weight-loss procedure.
Typically, the ideal candidate is one who has already lost a significant amount of weight and struggles with loose skin and/or stretched abdominal walls post-pregnancy.
It’s also recommended that anyone who plans on becoming pregnant again in the future hold off on a tummy tuck procedure until afterwards.
Pregnancy after a tummy tuck can undo much of the body contouring results provided by the procedure.
Patients who are interested in a tummy tuck should also be fully informed on what to expect in terms of results. It’s important to understand what the procedure can and can’t accomplish.
As with any surgical procedure, candidates for a tummy tuck must be in good physical health. It is highly recommended that those interested in a tummy tuck do not smoke or have any chronic conditions that are not well managed or under control.
If you only have minor loose skin and excess fat and don’t require as much surgical intervention, you may want to consider a mini tummy tuck, which is a less-invasive version of a full tummy tuck. Mini-abdominoplasty refers to lower abdominal contouring of the abdomen with a shorter scar, and no scar around the belly button.
How do I know if I’m a good candidate for Mommy Makeover surgery?
A woman who is an excellent candidate is in good overall health, has excess abdominal skin, stretched and separated abdominal muscles, excess fatty deposits in the flanks or thighs, has deflated, asymmetric and/or droopy breasts and nipples, and desires restoration of her breasts and body to beautiful proportions while accepting the presence of scars to do so. Patients should not have severe connective tissue disorders (Ehlers Danlos, Cutis laxa, etc.), should have normal blood counts (we check CBC and blood chemistry as part of our work-up), and those who smoke or take nicotine products should be free of nicotine exposure for 4 weeks before and after surgery (nicotine impairs wound healing).
Can I still do child care after a Mommy Makeover?
Absolutely – child care is an essential activity and part of what we term “activities of daily living”. If you live with a partner or spouse, you’ll benefit from extra help with lifting your children since lifting restrictions apply during the first few days to a week (less than ~20 lb). However, since you’ll be up and about immediately after surgery, you’ll be able to do the basic child care activities right away.
Can I have extra help at home?
Absolutely – our patients benefit from expert private duty nurses who have decades of experience. If you live alone or need extra help for self-care, childcare or pet care, then we can help arrange this. Please ask us!
What are the risks of surgery?
Risk depends on many factors and are divided into 3 categories: surgery risk, anesthesia risk, and long term risks. Surgery risks relate to complications related to surgery such as tissue injury, nerve injury, seroma (fluid build up), hematoma (bleeding problem), infection, asymmetry, scar thickening or contraction issue. Suffice to say (in this short paragraph) that risks are very low in the right surgeon’s hands and in the safest environment. Dr. Rad prides himself for successful surgery greater than 99.2% and, for those patients in the < 1% group, concerns such as scar or asymmetries can easily be addressed. This is why Dr. Rad enjoys such a wide reputation as one of Washington DC’s top plastic surgeons.
What is the risk of anesthesia?
With regard to anesthesia, many patients are concerned to be “put under” or have “general anesthesia,” and much clarification is needed. “General” anesthesia refers to placing patients in a sleep state that is safe enough for the surgeon to perform the work. It’s a very general term that can be very different, depending on the surgery: it includes “twilight,” a form of very light general anesthesia, all the way to very deep anesthesia as for heart surgery. If you think of an ocean that is 1 mile deep, anesthesia for open heart surgery is at the bottom of the ocean – this is where it can be risky – whereas “twilight” or light general is just under the surface of the water from which you emerge and recover quickly. This “just under the surface” is what your anesthesia would be like for elective surgery. Keep in mind that the quality and precision of anesthesia is just as important as performing safe surgery. Dr. Rad has found that working with board certified anesthesiologists is unparalleled in terms of safety which is why patients need not fear the process of “going under.”
