Overview of Face Cosmetic Surgery in Washington DC

Dr. Rad is experienced in facial cosmetic surgery, and during his tenure as Director of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery at Johns Hopkins he pioneered minimally invasive techniques designed to refresh and refine, without down time. From endonasal “closed” rhinoplasty to short scar face and neck lift to scarless eyelid lift and facial fat transfer, Dr. Rad’s approaches are nuanced and targeted to create subtle improvements in multiple areas that add up to an overall refreshed, natural result.

By minimizing disturbance to delicate facial tissues Dr. Rad shortens recovery and lessens discomfort, and combined with the most advanced “Enhanced Recovery After Anesthesia” (ERAS) protocols for pain management you can expect to feel back on track quickly. Dr. Rad collaborates with his wife, Board certified dermatologist Dr. Noëlle Sherber, to help patients improve skin tone and texture, pore size, and pigmentation, qualities which surgery does not address. Such synergy treatments combining the best of dermatology and plastic surgery offer patients results within the shortest period. Appointments are perfectly coordinated for your convenience and safety thus offering the the luxury of time.

Am I a Good Candidate for Facial Cosmetic Surgery?

The best candidates for facial cosmetic surgery are those who are healthy and who are not looking for dramatic makeovers. Dr. Rad makes subtle improvements adding up to a rested and refreshed appearance. Small adjustments in multiple areas, rather that major overhauls in limited areas, can give the appearance of “just back from holiday” while still looking like yourself. Facial cosmetic surgery is not a “one size fits all” endeavor, and Dr. Rad spends time with his patients to customize carefully the approach to meet each patient’s unique needs.

To establish whether you’re a good candidate for surgery, Dr. Rad will carefully review your medical history. Healthy patients usually don’t need extensive pre-surgical work-up. However, patients with medical problems (particularly heart, lung or kidney disease) will need “medical clearance” from their primary care physicians (PCP) and possibly from specialists. Additional medical tests and blood work may be needed. Dr. Rad and his staff will guide you.

Some patients ask to minimize surgery but still achieve a complete result. While Dr. Rad performs a range of small in-office procedures, limited approaches may be appropriate in only a small number of patients who have very focused concerns. Non-surgical dermatologic approaches enjoy many benefits: improved skin texture and tone, modest revolumization, little to no recovery time. These are best for younger patients looking to delay the need for surgery, or for patients who have had surgical lifts to maintain. However, once tissues have sagged, non-surgical treatments cannot make permanent and significant architectural improvements. Patients for whom non-surgical treatments have limited efficacy are those for whom surgery is appropriate.

How Does Dr. Rad Approach Facial Cosmetic Surgery?

Our appearance can significantly shape the interactions with the people in our personal and professional lives. Dr. Rad’s approach to facial aesthetic surgery is designed around achieving balance and harmony to the face while preserving the underlying architecture that defines a person’s appearance. As such, Dr. Rad does not do extreme makeovers or attempt to make someone look like another person. Instead, he seeks to utilize a wide array of customized techniques in order to highlight and amplify their existing beauty and working to enhance their features rather than to alter them.

Because of this approach, Dr. Rad places a lot of emphasis on the consultation. During this process he is focused on understanding the unique structure of each individual’s face in order to customize the ideal approach to achieving their aesthetic goals via facial cosmetic surgery.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

Your vision for your results will emerge through detailed consultation with Dr. Rad, meticulous examination of your anatomy, and careful pre-surgical planning. While Dr. Rad’s surgical approach is unique for each patient, the goal of naturalness remains constant.

Q+A

WHICH FACIAL COSMETIC PROCEDURES DOES DR. RAD PERFORM?

Dr. Rad’s expertise in facial cosmetic procedures includes: facelift, neck lift, brow lift, blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), rhinoplasty, lip lift, facial fat grafting (transfer), eyelid contouring to face, neck and brow lifts. Each patient has unique anatomy, healing ability, lifestyle and personal goals – therefore, cookie cutter approaches won’t do. Dr. Rad customizes each patient’s treatment plan uniquely, an approach that serves his patients well so that they may enjoy their results for a lifetime.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A CONSULTATION WITH DR. RAD?

To ensure the highest level of privacy of our patients, there is no waiting room, and you are guided to your own private, sound-proofed cabana where you and Dr. Rad will consult. Dr. Rad spends time with his patients, and you can expect to receive his undivided attention for at least an hour or longer. During a consultation Dr. Rad collects and synthesizes a tremendous amount of information to arrive at a specifically tailored plan for each patient.

HOW CAN I BE SURE TO GET AN OPTIMAL RESULT?

In short, choose the most qualified plastic surgeon. It is a fact, proven by scientific research, that the single most important factor in achieving superior results is the surgeon performing the work. Dr. Rad is certified by the ABPS and he has performed thousands of facial cosmetic procedures. Known for his ability and vision, Dr. Rad’s results are unparalleled and patients often seek him out for corrective work.

IS FACIAL COSMETIC SURGERY SAFE?

Facial cosmetic surgery is very safe and entails very low risk. Much of the risk relates to anesthesia and patients with heart, lung or kidney disease will need careful monitoring by skilled anesthesiologists. Your safety is Dr. Rad’s top priority and he works only with Board certified anesthesiologists in a hospital operating facility (not certified registered nurse anesthetists in a private surgicenter) to ensure you have the lowest anesthesia-related risk.

WILL ONE SURGERY ACHIEVE MY GOALS?

Other surgeries can be performed simultaneously, enhancing cost-effectiveness, comprehensive results and within the same recovery time. This is highly individualized as it depends on patients’ level of health, their lifestyles and professions (i.e. how much time can be taken off work), and how much surgery time Dr. Rad requires to perform each procedure to the highest quality standard possible.

WHAT WILL MY RECOVERY BE LIKE?

Recovery is usually as an outpatient and lasts between a few days to a few weeks, after which you can return to most activities as before. Discomfort is mild, and significant pain after surgery is rare, and down time lasts a week or less. Swelling is typical but transient, and varies with the extent of surgery as well as each person’s unique tissue reactions to surgery.

IS SURGERY THE ONLY OPTION?

Sometimes patients’ goals are better served with non-surgical treatments. For example, surgery is excellent for lifting (such as for sagging neck, jowls and cheeks) and contouring (such as in rhinoplasty and fat transfer), but it does not improve overall complexion, skin health, texture or elasticity. Likewise, dermatologic treatments improves complexion but is limited in lifting, tightening or improving contour. Oftentimes patients’ goals are served best with a combination of surgical and dermatologic approaches. For example, a patient who is concerned with sagging cheeks, downturned corners of the mouth, jowls and loose neck skin, and who have dark circles under the eyes, uneven skin tone and sun damage, can enjoy transformative results with a dual approach by both Drs. Sherber and Rad to optimize overall complexion and contour. Such synergy while minimizing invasiveness is usually best.

WHEN CAN I GO BACK TO WORK?

Several factors play into recovery time: (1) how strenuous your work is (for example, sitting at a desk is much less physically demanding than driving/hauling performed by a postal delivery person), (2) how professionally “demanding” your work is (for example, one person who works from home can return to work almost immediately, whereas a TV personality or Congressperson may need to be “under the radar” for much longer), and (3) how much “social downtime” you can tolerate (i.e. how comfortable will you feel seeing family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances). Usually pain is not the limiting factor, but rather swelling and mild bruising which resolve over days to weeks, depending on the extent of surgery. Dr. Rad tailors each approach to minimize invasiveness and thus limit swelling.

AM I TOO YOUNG TO HAVE FACIAL COSMETIC SURGERY?

Above 18 years, age is not a relevant factor in the decision to undergo aesthetic surgery as improvements can be legitimate at any age. The most important considerations are whether surgery can (1) be performed safely (sometimes combining multiple procedures is safe, but there is an upper limit), (2) achieve your aesthetic goals (having realistic expectations), and (3) minimizing invasiveness and downtime (months of recovery time is neither reasonable nor advisable). Teens and young adults benefit from family input as surgery can have an impact not only on your appearance but also on your state of mind. Preparing physically and emotionally for surgery is important so that your outcome aligns with the results you seek.

Consultation with Dr. Rad

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY CONSULTATION WITH DR. RAD?

Our plastic surgery office in Washington DC is centered on your comfort and privacy. You’ll be received by our exquisitely attentive staff, and escorted to your own private cabana wherein you’ll feel relaxed and comfortable while consulting discreetly with Dr. Rad. First Dr. Rad will determine if you are a good candidate for surgery and during your consultation you should decide if Dr. Rad is the right surgeon for you. Credentials are crucial and, in addition to being Board certified in plastic surgery, Dr. Rad is Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins, and he enjoys an impeccable reputation as a top flight aesthetic surgeon. His facial plastic surgery expertise is sought out as one of the best surgeons in Washington DC, northern Virginia and the US.

Your safety is Dr. Rad's primary concern and he will review your medical history. You should inform Dr. Rad of any medical problems or medications that may affect your healing. If you are medically appropriate to undergo surgery then Dr. Rad's focus will be to understand what specific aesthetic concerns you have. Washington DC patients expect natural results with minimal downtime. Dr. Rad will spend time carefully listening to your concerns, asking clarifying questions and then masterfully guiding you, step by step, to understand how your unique anatomy can be improved to convey a rested appearance. Dr. Rad’s goal is to determine the most comprehensive approach for long lasting, natural results while minimizing downtime. Dr. Rad first needs to understand your specific concerns and you should prepare your thoughts prior to your consultation. Think of words that convey how you feel about your appearance. For example, Washington DC patients often say they look fatigued, tired or lackluster because of undereye bags or dark undereye circles, or they look sad, upset or disinterested such as from heavy eyebrows, excess skin above the eyes or downturned corners of the mouth. Patients often relate concerns of looking older than how they feel and this can be caused by jowls, nasolabial folds, loose neck skin, lines and wrinkles. Try to put into words how your appearance bothers you, and the priority you give to each area. Dr. Rad will then present to you his expert opinion about which procedures would be best to restore your anatomy to create a rested and refreshed appearance. And since surgery is intricate Dr. Rad will guide you through a stepwise approach of aesthetic analysis and he’ll deliver his recommendations in a clear and honest manner. Dr. Rad will present all options available in modern day surgery, both non-surgical and surgical.

Dr. Rad and Board certified dermatologist Dr. Sherber often collaborate to optimize patients’ results and to minimize invasiveness. As such Dr. Rad’s modern approach to surgery harnesses the power of both dermatology and plastic surgery as both specialities address different aesthetic challenges. For example, plastic surgery is effective to lift, tighten and volumize loose, atrophied tissues, whereas dermatologic treatments such as laser, radiofrequency tightening and skincare are best to improve skin texture, pigmentation and tone. Dr. Rad can address any concerns regarding skin quality and how to obtain and maintain optimal results.

Dr. Rad will review with you photos of his patients’ results (many of which you’ll not find online due to privacy concerns) to highlight his aesthetic approaches and skill. He will take your photographs, which remain confidential, to assist with the planning of your surgery. For your safety Dr. Rad performs surgery in a hospital-based operating room, considered to be the safest environment, rather than in the office. Anesthesia is delivered by a board certified anesthesiologist (MD) and you’ll be under light anesthesia which is important for your safety and comfort.

You will receive a customized quote for the procedures in which you’re interested. Once approved we may then move forward with pre-operative preparations and you will meet with Dr. Rad again at your final in person consultation prior to surgery. Dr. Rad’s reputation as one of the most technically gifted surgeons attracts patients nationally and from around the world. We cater to patients from across the globe by arranging virtual consultations, luxury accommodations at The Jefferson hotel, Washington DC’s most luxurious 5 star boutique hotel, as well as private nursing care. Your privacy, comfort and safely achieving exceptional results are our top priorities.
