Face Cosmetic Surgery

Dr. Rad is expert in facial cosmetic surgery, and during his tenure as Director of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery at Johns Hopkins he pioneered minimally invasive techniques designed to refresh and refine, without down time. From endonasal “closed” rhinoplasty to short scar face and neck lift to scarless eyelid lift and facial fat transfer, Dr. Rad’s approaches are nuanced and targeted to create subtle improvements in multiple areas that add up to an overall refreshed, natural result. By minimizing disturbance to delicate facial tissues Dr. Rad shortens recovery and lessens discomfort, and combined with the most advanced “Enhanced Recovery After Anesthesia” (ERAS) protocols for pain management you can expect to feel back on track quickly. Dr. Rad collaborates with his wife, Board certified dermatologist Dr. Noëlle Sherber, to help patients improve skin tone and texture, pore size, and pigmentation, qualities which surgery does not address. Such synergy treatments combining the best of dermatology and plastic surgery offer patients the best results within the shortest period. Appointments are perfectly coordinated for your convenience and safety thus offering the the luxury of time.

Procedure Cost

STATS: According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, in 2016, the most popular procedures were liposuction, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), and rhinoplasty (nose job). In the United States US$13.5B was spent on cosmetic surgery, an increase of 11% from 2014. In Washington DC, the most popular aesthetic enhancements at SHERBER+RAD are lower blepharoplasty (under-eye bag removal), upper blepharoplasty (upper eyelid lift), facial contouring procedures such as facial fat transfer and buccal fat removal, mini-face lift, neck lift and rhinoplasty.

COST: In Dr. Rad’s DC practice, the cost for aesthetic procedures for in-office procedures range from $1,100 for non-surgical rhinoplasty, $3,000 for upper blepharoplasty to $3,500 for buccal fat removal, to $9,000 to $13,000 for face and neck lifts, $8,000 to $11,000 for first-time rhinoplasty (depending on complexity), to $18,000 to $30,000 for corrective work or extensive total facial rejuvenation. Total cost depends on multiple factors: your unique anatomy, your goals, complexity of the procedures, the technique used (non-surgical versus surgical), whether corrective work is needed, in-office or hospital-based operating facility, combining multiple procedures (increasing concessions apply for multiple procedures), and the training, certification (Board certification is essential), experience (at least 8 years of experience after residency is recommended), and artistic eye and skill (the unteachable talent) of your surgeon.

RECOVERY: Recovery can be just 24 hours for minor in-office non-surgical procedure or minimally invasive surgery, to 2 weeks for most extensive procedures. Dr. Rad’s minimally invasive approaches allow patients to return to work very quickly.

With age comes experience and wisdom. However, we all want to be in control of how we present ourselves to the world. The goal of facial aesthetic surgery is not to smooth every crease or wrinkle, but rather to restore a rested and refreshed appearance. The most sophisticated work reveals the best version of one’s appearance, yet it goes unnoticed by the casual observer and does not induce speculation. Dr. Rad’s goal for each patient is to achieve this delicate balance.

Photos are of patients who have given explicit written agreement to have them displayed. For patient privacy reasons, the majority of Dr. Rad’s patients prefer their before/after photos to remain off-line. However, Dr. Rad will be happy to show you, in the setting of a confidential consultation, a series of before/after photos, not displayed here, to address your specific concerns.

In Dr. Rad’s hands, and with Dr. Sherber’s maintenance treatments, results after face lift surgery last many years. This 65 year old woman wanted to restore her appearance to how she looked 15-20 years ago. She lamented how she used to have a bright and rested appearance and she wanted these features to be restored. Dr. Rad performed Canthopexy Eye Reshaping and Upper Blepharoplasty, Short Incision Brow Lift, Total Face Lift, Open Neck Lift, Lower Blepharoplasty + Fat Removal, and Facial Fat Grafting.

Dr. Rad routinely performs brow lift surgery in combination with, or independently of, Face Lift and Open Neck Lift surgery. This 42 year old breast cancer survivor wanted to take the look of fatigue out of her eyes. She said that her breast cancer journey aged her face, and so she wanted to look relaxed and refreshed again as she did before her cancer diagnosis. Dr. Rad performed endoscopic brow lift, Open Neck Lift, SMAS Imbrication Face Lift, Facial Fat Grafting, Upper Blepharoplasty, and Lower Bleph + Fat Removal.

The best candidates for facial cosmetic surgery are those who are healthy and who are not looking for dramatic makeovers. Dr. Rad makes subtle improvements adding up to a rested and refreshed appearance. Small adjustments in multiple areas, rather that major overhauls in limited areas, can give the appearance of “just back from holiday” while still looking like yourself. Facial cosmetic surgery is not a “one size fits all” endeavor, and Dr. Rad spends time with his patients to customize carefully the approach to meet each patient’s unique needs.

To establish whether you’re a good candidate for surgery, Dr. Rad will carefully review your medical history. Healthy patients usually don’t need extensive pre-surgical work-up. However, patients with medical problems (particularly heart, lung or kidney disease) will need “medical clearance” from their primary care physicians (PCP) and possibly from specialists. Additional medical tests and blood work may be needed. Dr. Rad and his expert staff will guide you.

Some patients ask to minimize surgery but still achieve a complete result. While Dr. Rad performs a range of small in-office procedures, limited approaches may be appropriate in only a small number of patients who have very focused concerns. Non-surgical dermatologic approaches enjoy many benefits: improved skin texture and tone, modest revolumization, little to no recovery time. These are best for younger patients looking to delay the need for surgery, or for patients who have had surgical lifts to maintain. However, once tissues have sagged, non-surgical treatments cannot make permanent and significant architectural improvements. Patients for whom non-surgical treatments have limited efficacy are those for whom surgery is appropriate.

There are many factors to consider when seeking a plastic surgeon for face lift, rhinoplasty brow and eyelid lift surgery. Here are several of the most important ones to keep in mind:

1. Ensure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. When it comes to cosmetic surgical expertise, board certification in any other specialty or field is largely irrelevant. Therefore, be wary of claims of “double board certified” or “triple board certified” as these additional certifications rarely contribute to a surgeon’s expertise.
2. Consider his/her education, training and professional background. Are they world class and known for excellence? Not all institutions are created equal.
3. Ensure your surgeon stays current with modern techniques: an indication of this is academic affiliations such as professorships or directorships.
4. Understand your surgeon’s philosophy and his/her aesthetic: each surgeon has a different approach and vision, and they should align with yours.
