Overview of “Cat Eye” Reshaping in Washington DC

Washingtonians prefer subtle enhancements with minimal downtime and no evidence of surgery. Along these lines, subtle enhancement of eye shape can transform eyes from dull and tired to alluring and vibrant. Canthopexy, or “cat eye lift,” is a highly artistic and delicate, but minimally invasive, procedure and Dr. Rad uses it to enhance a woman’s beauty . Dr. Rad’s unique approach lifts the outer corners of the eyes which tilts the horizontal axis (i.e., a line drawn from the inner to outer corner), creating a more beautiful shape. By comparison, Melania Trump’s eyes have a similar shape of a cat’s eyes which is part of her striking beauty. During a comfortable 45 minute in-office procedure under local anesthetic, either alone or in combination with upper blepharoplasty to brighten eyes further, canthopexy can be performed with only 3 days of recovery. Seek the expertise of an eyelid lift specialist like Dr. Rad because the margin of error is very small for such a delicate procedure.

Am I a Good Candidate for “Cat Eye” Reshaping?

Eyes looking sad, morose or simply not attractive can be disconcerting. The cat eye lift can help to reverse these appearances either alone or in combination with brow lift or blepharoplasty procedures. The patient most likely to benefit from Cat Eye reshaping is one whose eyes tilt slightly downward and/or whose outer lower eyelid contours appear to be “sagging”. If you find it bothersome to see yourself in photos with “sad appearing” eyes then this may be due to downward tilting eye shape. The shape and tilt of eyebrows definitely impacts this and Dr. Rad commonly recommends combination brow lift with canthopexy. Reversing the downward tilt can reverse the sad appearance and restore a more attractive, alluring eye shape. Brow and eyelid lifts can work synergistically to enhance the results further. As in all cases, patients should be in good overall health and have a firm understanding with regards to the expectations.

How Does Dr. Rad Approach “Cat Eye” Reshaping?

Following a detailed discussion regarding all aspects of the procedure, Dr. Rad works with you to formulate the best plan to achieve your goals with as little invasiveness as possible. Most patients benefit from 3 different approaches: (1) canthopexy alone, (2) canthopexy with brow lift, (3) canthopexy with brow lift and upper blepharoplasty. The 1st approach can be performed in-office under local anesthetic. The 2nd and 3rd approaches generally can be performed in-office using local injected anesthesia and relaxing medications, however only if the brow lift is done with a “Direct Excision” technique (incision placed along the top edge of the eyebrow). To perform the canthopexy, Dr. Rad places an upper eyelid incision within the natural crease – this gives access to the strong tissue (called periosteum) overlying the brow bone; Dr. Rad also releases the attachment of the lower eyelid from the “canthus” which is the strong tissue attaching the corner of the eye. Dr. Rad then places permanent very fine sutures through the edge of the lower eyelid, lifts it gently upward in a diagonal direction, tunnels it beneath the eyelid tissues, and then anchors it to the brow bone – this creates a gentle, subtle tilting of the eye shape reminiscent of a cat’s eyes, hence the name. This procedure is usually combined with Upper Blepharoplasty and/or Lower Blepharoplasty and/or Brow Lift for complete rejuvenation of the eye and brow areas. In Dr. Rad’s hands, canthopexy surgery is safe, comfortable, and involves very low risk.

Q+A

What is Canthopexy (Cat Eye Lift)?

Canthopexy or “cat eye lift” refers to procedure whereby Dr. Rad elevates the outer corners of the eyes with the goal of gently tilting the eye shape – visually this translates to enhanced beauty of a woman’s or man’s eyes without drastically changing her appearance.

Why might I benefit from Canthopexy?

Men or women who might benefit from canthopexy include those whose eyes look sad, fatigued, lackluster and disinterested. Oftentimes this is due to an unfavorable downward tilt of the eyes. Age-related looseness of the lower eyelid can also cause excess “scleral show” (i.e. the whites of the eyes are visible below the iris) – canthopexy is a good fix for this, as well.

What is better: Canthopexy or Upper Blepharoplasty?

Neither is better – both are unique and achieve complementary goals. Think of canthopexy as enhancing eye shape to create an alluring appearance, whereas upper blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) brightens and refreshes the eyes. Both work synergistically with each other and Dr. Rad often employs both to achieve the 100% result for his Washington DC and northern Virginia eyelid lift patients.

What are the downsides of Canthopexy?

There are very few downsides. When skin laxity is moderate, particularly in the outer eyelid region, an upper blepharoplasty may be necessary to obtain the best canthopexy result. However, this is not a true downside as the result becomes better by combining both procedures.

What can I expect after surgery?

Mild soreness and temporary swelling are common. Most patients can expect most swelling to resolve in a few days. Bruising is mild and easily concealable. Return to full unrestricted activities depend on how vigorous your work and exercise are, and generally ranges from a few days to weeks.

Can this be combined with other procedures?

Yes! Cat eye lift synergizes well with facelift, brow lift, and upper and lower blepharoplasty. Think of it as a powerful tool Dr. Rad uses to refine features and restore volume in specific areas to achieve balanced and nuanced results.

Credentials are crucial and, in addition to being Board certified in plastic surgery, Dr. Rad is Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins, and he enjoys an impeccable reputation as a top flight aesthetic surgeon. His facial plastic surgery expertise is sought out as one of the best surgeons in Washington DC, northern Virginia and the US.

Your safety is Dr. Rad's primary concern and he will review your medical history. You should inform Dr. Rad of any medical problems or medications that may affect your healing. If you are medically appropriate to undergo surgery then Dr. Rad's focus will be to understand what specific aesthetic concerns you have. Washington DC patients expect natural results with minimal downtime. Dr. Rad will spend time carefully listening to your concerns, asking clarifying questions and then masterfully guiding you, step by step, to understand how your unique anatomy can be improved to convey a rested appearance. Dr. Rad’s goal is to determine the most comprehensive approach for long lasting, natural results while minimizing downtime. Dr. Rad first needs to understand your specific concerns and you should prepare your thoughts prior to your consultation. Think of words that convey how you feel about your appearance. For example, Washington DC patients often say they look fatigued, tired or lackluster because of undereye bags or dark undereye circles, or they look sad, upset or disinterested such as from heavy eyebrows, excess skin above the eyes or downturned corners of the mouth. Patients often relate concerns of looking older than how they feel and this can be caused by jowls, nasolabial folds, loose neck skin, lines and wrinkles. Try to put into words how your appearance bothers you, and the priority you give to each area. Dr. Rad will then present to you his expert opinion about which procedures would be best to restore your anatomy to create a rested and refreshed appearance. And since surgery is intricate Dr. Rad will guide you through a stepwise approach of aesthetic analysis and he’ll deliver his recommendations in a clear and honest manner. Dr. Rad will present all options available in modern day surgery, both non-surgical and surgical.

Dr. Rad and Board certified dermatologist Dr. Sherber often collaborate to optimize patients’ results and to minimize invasiveness. As such Dr. Rad’s modern approach to surgery harnesses the power of both dermatology and plastic surgery as both specialities address different aesthetic challenges. For example, plastic surgery is effective to lift, tighten and volumize loose, atrophied tissues, whereas dermatologic treatments such as laser, radiofrequency tightening and skincare are best to improve skin texture, pigmentation and tone. Dr. Rad can address any concerns regarding skin quality and how to obtain and maintain optimal results.

Dr. Rad will review with you photos of his patients’ results (many of which you’ll not find online due to privacy concerns) to highlight his aesthetic approaches and skill. He will take your photographs, which remain confidential, to assist with the planning of your surgery. For your safety Dr. Rad performs surgery in a hospital-based operating room, considered to be the safest environment, rather than in the office. Anesthesia is delivered by a board certified anesthesiologist (MD) and you’ll be under light anesthesia which is important for your safety and comfort.

You will receive a customized quote for the procedures in which you’re interested. Once approved we may then move forward with pre-operative preparations and you will meet with Dr. Rad again at your final in person consultation prior to surgery. Dr. Rad’s reputation as one of the most technically gifted surgeons attracts patients nationally and from around the world. We cater to patients from across the globe by arranging virtual consultations, luxury accommodations at The Jefferson hotel, Washington DC’s most luxurious 5 star boutique hotel, as well as private nursing care. What is the cost of cat eye lift surgery?

The cost of a cat eye lift procedure depends on many factors: the type of brow lift, whether it is performed in-office or in a hospital-based OR, and the quality/skill of the surgeon. In Dr. Rad’s Washington DC facial cosmetic surgery practice, the cost of canthopexy surgery is roughly $4,900. With that said, pricing can exceed $7,500 for complex eyelid reconstruction or corrective work after prior unsatisfactory work. While total cost increases when combined with other procedures, surgery is cost-effective when multiple procedures are combined. Cost is a reflection of the skill and experience required to obtain excellent results. Under Dr. Rad’s care your experience is guaranteed to be the highest quality.
