Overview of Daxxify in Washington DC

What is Daxxify?

Daxxify (daxibotulinumtoxinA) is a new injectable wrinkle reducing treatment that may last longer than other cosmetic toxins such as Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, or Jeuveau. Dr. Noëlle Sherber, a board-certified dermatologist, was selected as one of the first expert injectors in Washington, D.C. to offer Daxxify in her practice.

Clinical studies show that, whereas results with other toxins last 3-4 months, at least 50% of patients injected with Daxxify had no or minor frown lines 6 months after treatment. In other safety studies, between 5% and 17% of patients still had noticeable improvement 9 months later.

Daxxify is made of a purified protein called botulinum toxin A, the same type of toxin that’s used in all of the injectable toxins that are FDA approved for cosmetic use in the United States. Botulinum toxins are biologics, produced from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. They are used to inhibit the transmission of specific chemical signals from nerves, primarily those signals that cause muscular contractions.

Botulinum toxin type A injections temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles, reducing their appearance. Injectable wrinkle treatments containing botulinum toxin type A have been used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines for more than 20 years. The first FDA-approved treatment was Botox Cosmetic, followed by Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau.

Daxxify differs from other botulinum toxin type A injectable products in that a novel proprietary peptide stabilizes the toxin in the neuromuscular junction. It is FDA-approved to smooth moderate to severe lines between the brows and has demonstrated results that last on average 6 months and up to 9 months for some.

All injected neurotoxins require a special ingredient to stabilize botulinum toxin A, the protein responsible for helping relax muscles and smooth lines. Botox Cosmetic uses human serum albumin (HSA) as its stabilizer. Dysport, another frown line treatment, uses HSA as a stabilizer and cow’s milk protein as a protectant. Daxxify is unique because it is the only formulation that uses a novel peptide as a stabilizer and does not contain human or animal byproducts.

Daxxify is manufactured by Revance Therapeutics, a U.S. company based in California. Revance was founded as a start-up in 2002 in Silicon Valley, California to explore the use of peptides in biologics for different therapeutic uses. Their goal was to utilize peptides to transport biologics, typically large molecules, through the skin. The initial idea was to formulate botulinum toxin type A with a peptide to see if it could be applied topically to the skin to treat crow’s feet wrinkles. Through this process, scientists discovered that the formulation was optimally administered through injection. Several clinical studies were created to determine the correct dose for an injectable product that would treat frown lines.

What to Expect

Daxxify is injected in the same manner as other neuromodulators, using a very thin needle. Two Daxxify units are equivalent to one Botox unit, so you can expect to receive more Daxxify units than you would Botox units. New studies support that optimal Daxxify dosing to achieve a longer duration begins at 40 units for frown lines, 48 units for crow’s feet, and 32 units for the upper forehead. Dr. Sherber customizes each treatment based on her patients’ anatomy and aesthetic goals, and those with stronger muscles may require a higher number of units for optimal results.

Results may begin to appear as soon as the day after treatment, and typically within two days, and can last up to twice as long as those achieved with other neuromodulators.

Daxxify was studied in the largest-ever clinical study for a frown line treatment and included more than 2,800 people across different ages and skin types. In this study there were no serious treatment-related side effects. The active ingredient in Daxxify is botulinum toxin type A, an ingredient that has been used in frown line treatments for more than 20 years. This clinical trial demonstrated that 96% of people treated with Daxxify were satisfied with their results at 4 weeks.

There is a possibility that the area around the injection site will swell, turn red, and cause pain or tenderness from the injection itself; however, these side effects are typically very minor and go away after a few hours or days.

Ideal Candidates for Daxxify

Research has shown that nearly 90% of patients wish their injectable frown line treatment lasted longer. Daxxify may be the right choice if you are disappointed with the duration of your current injectable neuromodulator treatment. Daxxify is safe and effective in all skin types.

Your should not receive Daxxify if you are allergic to any of the ingredients; had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product such as rimabotulinumtoxinB (Myobloc), onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox), abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport), incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin) or prabotulinumtoxinA (Jeuveau); or have a skin infection at the planned injection site. Treatment is not advised if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Taking blood thinners, Aspirin, NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen or Aleve, fish oil or omega3 supplements, supplements containing vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, and alcohol can all increase the likelihood of bruising.

What are Dr. Sherber’s patients saying?

  • great experience – Baltimore, MD
Botox/Juvaderm has made me look 10 yrs younger! Excellent results. Minimal bruising. Very comfortable experience with a very caring doctor.”

    – Kim in Pa (RealSelf)

  • “I started seeing Dr. Sherber for Botox, laser and fillers, approximately 10 years ago in Baltimore. I followed her to Washington D.C. when she and her husband, plastic surgeon Dr. Rad, opened a joint practice. Last year it was time to for Dr. Sherber to hand me over to Dr. Rad for surgical work. I had an amazing experience with Dr. Rad when he performed a lower face/necklift, chin implant, lower blepharoplasty and fat transfer. At the one year mark, I decided to return for a tummy tuck and upper arm lipo. This time I was smart to stay in Sibley hospital – 2 nights – after my experience with hard-to-control pain during the first 2 post-op days last year, when we were in an outpatient surgical center. I was treated very well despite being very needy with respect to pain control. Everything is still very swollen and bruised but looks good so far. I will continue to travel to D.C. for maintenance treatment and any new procedures with both of them. They are that amazing.”
